What Do You Need In Your Bedroom
I am an interior designer. Many experts disapprove of DIY, but not me! I am here to offer some practical, easy-to-follow recommendations.
My experience as an interior designer has taught me that, when it comes to bedrooms, people rarely invent something new. After dozens of projects and sleepless nights of planning, I have come to the conclusion that there is a certain set of simple things that a bedroom can't manage without.
Top 10 Things You Must Have in Your Bedroom
- Bed
- Rug
- Bedside Table or Nightstand
- Convenient Sockets and Electronic Plug-Ins
- Light Source
- Wall Décor
- Mirror
- Something Natural
- Chair, Armchair, or Sofa
- Spirit
Do you really need these things and if so, why? I explain below.
1. Bed
As the name of the room suggests, the main point of the bedroom is the bed. Don't skimp on comfort. The irony is that we sometimes replace "Its Majesty the Bed" with something less comfortable but more convenient, for example, a futon or an inflatable mattress. These options have their advantages and disadvantages, but the point is that you need something to sleep on.
And comfort is key. I am an avid advocate of real beds whenever possible: The more comfortable, the better. But if it is not possible to use a real bed because of the size of the room or for any other reason, feel free to turn your bedroom into… hmmm… a sofa room.
2. Rug
Whatever flooring you have, you can hardly imagine a cozy room without a nice rug. This little (or not that little, depending on your choice) thing can change the whole bedroom dramatically in terms of both its look and feel. Even the most up-to-date and trendy bedroom will benefit from a fluffy bedside rug to step on every morning.
3. Bedside Table or Nightstand
While we are on the subject of bedside essentials, a bedside table is a must in any bedroom. There should always be a place within arm's reach where you can put your smartphone, glasses, a glass of water, or dozens of other things that you may need on hand. So, think of a stylish nightstand for your most-needed possessions. The video below offers guidance in terms of style, size, and height.
4. Convenient Sockets
Let's face it: we all like to spend loads of time on the Internet and often do it in our bedrooms. In some places where I have lived, convenient sockets were more like a rosy dream than a reality, so I spent quite a lot of time untangling extension cords. Now, I always pay attention to this aspect when planning a new bedroom project and highly recommend you to do the same.
5. Light Source
I have always been an avid advocate of spotlighting, but if you prefer one luxurious chandelier, why not? The thing is to make it convenient, according to your needs. Light dimmers are also a good idea: You can get the right mood any time by switching from bright, day-like light to a muted, romantic ambiance. As for windows, I always recommend utilizing them as much as possible—instead of draping them with heavy curtains, try to let more light in! (Unless you have too-nosy neighbors, in which case ignore this recommendation.)
6. Wall Décor
It is a particularly difficult subject to give general advice on, but I will try. Monochrome walls can look stylish, but our eye looks for interesting details everywhere. If nothing is to be seen, we feel bored.
Wall décor can take different forms, meaning that you are not obliged to hang a golden-framed picture on every wall. Paintings, posters, photos, panels, murals, tapestries, maps, collections of postcards or hats… I could go on and on, but I think you've got the idea: turning a dull wall into a work of art is simpler than it seems.
7. Mirror
Even if you have a nice mirror in the bathroom, sometimes you want to check your look before you step across the threshold of your bedroom. Not only that, but it is common knowledge that mirrors work magic in small rooms because they create the illusion of more space and light. So, unless you have spectrophobia, having a mirror in your bedroom is a good idea.
8. Something Natural
Even if you choose a high-tech style for your bedroom, it is the place where you are supposed to relax. Metal and plastic are like energetic vampires, so there should be something natural or hand-made in your bedroom to serve as a source of energy. Options vary, so you can choose something that suits your style: plants and aquariums, wooden flooring and rattan furniture, organic fabrics, and natural stone décor.

9. Chair/Armchair/Canapé
Lying on the bed is always relaxing, but I know that many people disapprove of this little indulgence. When planning the design of a couple's bedroom, I always ask them if they have this no-slugging-on-the-made-bed issue. It sounds ridiculous, but lots of couples have regular fights because one of the partners thinks that the bed is intended for sleep only, while the other doesn't mind sitting on it during the day. If this is the case, there should be something to sit on apart from the bed. Whether it's an armchair or a beanbag is up to you.
10. Spirit
What makes your bedroom so comfortable and appealing? People often come to me and ask to design "something special." Even though every project is special, I am always at a loss when I hear this request. The room can be made stylish, beautiful, or elegant, but it's the people who live there who make it special. I firmly believe that your bedroom reflects your personality, and this is your responsibility, not the designer's responsibility. Fortunately, it does not require much effort because you create it from the moment you step across the threshold of this room.

I have all these things planned to be in my bedroom, but I still have quite a bit of room left, and I'm not allowed to have a TV in my room, don't need a desk since we have an office, and the vanity will go in my closet. Any ideas of what to put in there?
