What Is an Intimacy Coordinator, and How Are They Making Sex Scenes Look More Realistic?

Like Winona Ryder, I too performed the 2020 spring-lockdown rite of passage of watching Hulu's Normal People. I was awed by the rawness and realism in the miniseries' sex scenes.

With Normal People came an awareness of other recent titles giving a verisimilar approach to their intimate content. I'm talking about Sex Education, Bridgerton and Gentleman Jack. This new treatment of sexual content reminded me of the infamous wedding episode in season one of Outlander and how it had been praised for its manifestation of the female gaze.

Shows like Normal People and I May Destroy You aren't shying away from period sex, loss of virginity with some discomfort and consent as a continuous concept. But navigating these sensitive scenes with the level of nuance they need can require some special consideration. At the forefront of these scenes are their creators, writers and directors, of course. But there are also professionals called intimacy coordinators making sure there are proper procedures established on sets so that simulated sex can be captured and shown on the screen in the safest way.

Intimacy Coordinators as Intimate Content Choreographers

Ita O'Brien — intimacy coordinator for Normal People, Sex Education and I May Destroy You and a pioneer in the industry — likens her profession to that of a dance choreographer or a stunt coordinator. "An intimacy coordinator is a practitioner who brings a professional process and professional practices to the intimate content," she says during a video chat interview. "[We're] dealing with the intimate content in a professional way, with open communication, agreement and consent inherent within the process — and that's of touch, of simulation of sexual content and of nudity. Whereas in the past, it was just like: 'You're an actor, get on with it.'

"We're bringing techniques of where to hold. What body part to push into body part. What rhythm do we want to start with. What's the journey through. What's the culmination," she adds about her work in choreographing intimate content. O'Brien says this kind of professional structure gives the performers the tools to do their work. The kisses can come freely and the actors can develop all their skills. They know they're taken care of and there won't be surprises or unwanted touching. Everything has been previously decided, rehearsed and agreed upon.

O'Brien also points out that intimacy coordinators help the actors in their process to discover how their characters would have sex. "This isn't the person's personal and private intimate expression. This is these characters. What's the kind of movement that we need for these characters? You need practitioners who are going to bring that."

When Are Intimacy Coordinators Necessary?

While not all film, TV or theater productions should have a use for an intimacy coordinator, O'Brien talks about the need to engage a professional if there's any kind of intimate content. Even if it's just a kiss.

"It's never just a kiss," says O'Brien. "Kissing is way more intimate and can be more challenging than a full-on simulated sexual scene. In a simulated sex scene, you have modesty garments covering the genitalia. It's absolutely pretend. Whereas, actually, if you have to kiss lip to lip you are kissing lip to lip."

Founder of Intimacy on Set, an organization that trains and works with professional intimacy coordinators, O'Brien has developed the Intimacy on Set Guidelines, a set of best practices when working with intimacy, simulated sex scenes and nudity. "When kissing, no use of tongues as standard practice," read the guidelines. "However, should the director feel it would serve the scene better to use tongues, then there must be agreement and consent from both of the actors."

This kind of structure and these types of safety guidelines provided by intimacy coordinators are not only being adopted in TV, although O'Brien admits long-form shows have more space and time to get in-depth with these explorations. Taking a look at O'Brien's credits and those of some of her peers — like Bridgerton's intimacy coordinator, Lizzy Talbot, and The Undoing's Alicia Rodis — shows how TV is leading the way.

A Maturing Profession

While the industry moves toward embracing and adopting these professionals, O'Brien says she's working with other pioneers in this line of work to have an outside accreditation so it's clear who's an accredited, experienced intimacy coordinator and who is not.

"I'm training practitioners across the globe. It's really important that [in] the industry they make sure that the intimacy coordinators that they employ are trained, or under mentorship. There are many people now who are jumping on the bandwagon, looking at what we do, and thinking: 'I can do that.' Because it seems like there's very little, but, actually, the job is incredibly complex," she says.

Part of that complexity comes from the many people an intimacy coordinator has to serve in any given production. O'Brien insists their work is not only to serve the actors, but also the producers — who are the ones paying in the first place — and the directors. She explains how in Normal People she worked closely with director Lenny Abrahamson to ensure she was serving his vision and she didn't miss one single bit from what was written on the page. Intimacy coordinators need to make sure sex is portrayed safely, without getting in the way.

In some of the TV shows and films I've watched recently, I almost could guess whether they'd worked with an intimacy coordinator or they'd just "winged" it.

"Through the work of the intimacy coordinator, we can bring more authentic and more detailed intimate scenes that help us have more realistic intimate content," O'Brien says, and she recalls the Normal People episode in which Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) loses her virginity. The sequence included a conversation about protection, consent and even showed the discomfort she first felt during intercourse.

At the end of the day, intimacy coordinators are also serving the viewer.

Things To Put On Wall In Bedroom

Things To Put On Wall In Bedroom

So you've moved into a new place or have finally saved up enough to decorate that neglected living room—yay you! When you start to plan out the design of your space, you'll surely think about the style you want to achieve (is it more preppy and traditional or coastal and casual?), colors you want to incorporate (with paint, pillows, rugs, and other accents), and of course the furniture pieces on your to-buy list. But in all this planning and Pinning, there is one design element you might be unknowingly neglecting: texture.

You've probably heard the phrase adding texture to a space, but do you know how to put it into action? It's a favorite buzzword among designers—and one of the keys to creating a space that looks "finished"—so we went straight to the source for the best tips and ideas to successfully incorporate texture to your home.

What Does Adding Texture Actually Mean?

To put it simply, adding texture means creating visual interest, explains Los Angeles-based designer Liz Foster. And you can do that in a number of ways, but the key is diversity among the objects and finishings in your space.

Furniture, Pillow, Cushion, Room, Bedding, Bed, Fur, Bedroom, Textile, Tree,

Jenna Peffley

"When we talk about adding texture, we are referring to the layering of various textiles, materials, colors, and metals in a space," say Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto, the Chicago duo behind Park & Oak Interior Design. Think: adding a wool blanket to your leather armchair, a coffee table that mixes brass and unfinished wood, a pink velvet sofa against a pink wallpapered wall.

Liz points out that in addition to being something you can touch and feel, texture can also refer simply to a visual display of objects. "For instance, a collection of varying types of pottery displayed on a shelf will give your space more 'texture' or 'visual interest' than a single framed photo displayed in the same spot," she says.

Lots of Layers Means Lots of Pieces

Living room, Furniture, Room, Interior design, Home, Property, Table, Coffee table, Wall, Ceiling,

Renee DiSanto

Here's one secret: Nailing the textured, layered look usually takes time—that is unless you're a designer with a storage unit full of staging decor. That's why sometimes when you first move into a new home, even filling it up with all the necessities leaves it feeling like it's missing something.

"I think forgetting to layer in texture can lead to a space feeling flat, or soulless," says Nashville designer Lori Paranjape. Christina and Renee second that idea: "Texture is really the secret to making a space look and feel finished and lived in. The more you can mix opposing elements the better."

Over time, you can buy pieces that really speak to you and add them in to create a new layer and further fill out a space. And doing this gradually is almost always better than trying to buy every single element at once (again, those designers have been stockpiling or eyeing these perfectly placed goods for months if not years), because you shouldn't buy something just because it checks a box if you don't love it.

Bedroom, White, Room, Furniture, Interior design, Bed sheet, Yellow, Bed, Property, Bed frame,

Jenna Peffley

"I encourage incorporating texture for the same reason I discourage clients from buying items in 'sets,'" Liz says. "Like when the coffee table and side tables are a perfect match. A room feels flat and lifeless if all the furniture is the same wood with the same linen upholstery, drapes, and pillows." Again, diversity is key.

Let's Get Layering

So as you purchase new layers for your home (or simply rearrange what's already there), here are some ideas and guidelines to keep in mind to ensure you're incorporating texture like a pro.

Texture can be monochromatic:

"If a space I'm designing is white, I never try to stay with the same white tone. I use an entire spectrum of whites, beige, taupe, ivory, even black. It's the build-up of sameness that keeps the space from feeling flat or cold." - Lori Paranjape

Countertop, Furniture, Room, White, Cabinetry, Kitchen, Interior design, Property, Ceiling, Building,

Paige Rumore Photography

Keep track of what's already there:

"When designing a room, I'm constantly reminding myself of what materials are being used where to ensure there's enough contrast. I'm making sure I'm not pulling a brass lamp to go on a brass side table or an oak mirror to go over an oak console." - Liz Foster

Don't limit your texture to accent pieces:

Sometimes creating the right mix of materials and textures is a little more involved than adding a new throw pillow. Don't forget about your walls (paint and wallpaper are the ultimate backdrop for all your other layers), light sources (a treasure trove of material options), and flooring (try layering rugs).

Bathroom, Room, Property, Interior design, Tile, Furniture, Floor, Building, House, Real estate,

Renee DiSanto

Don't be afraid of lots of mixed materials:

"If you mix a leather sofa with a glass coffee table, raw oak side table, chrome-framed armchair with wool upholstery, and so on, your space will look and feel much more interesting and unexpected now that you've incorporated a wide variety of textures." - Liz

Adding bit by bit doesn't have to break the bank:

"A fur pillow on a linen sofa or layering a vintage wool runner over a large seagrass area rug are easy ways to add texture without much expense." - Liz

Play with Pattern

101877696

If you start with a neutral base, add patterns and textures to create visual interest. In this bedroom, the warm off-white walls and neutral furnishings get a splash of personality from the patterned bedding and draperies. When mixing patterns, it's important to keep the scale and colors of each print in mind.

Neutrals Gone Traditional

This traditional-style bedroom looks clean and simple thanks to a neutral color scheme. The cream-colored walls, bedding, and draperies wrap the room with subtle warmth and elegant simplicity. The dark-stained bed frame and upholstered foot-of-the-bed stools prevent the neutral color scheme from looking washed out.

A Little Color

Tall & Simple Headboard

Add a splash of personality to an otherwise neutral bedroom with one or two brightly colored accessories. A pretty pink throw at the foot of the bed and a pair of colorful framed art prints on the wall ensure the neutral bedroom looks anything but boring. To keep the look serene, use colors with brown or gray undertones to help the hues blend into their neutral surroundings. Here, a shocking magenta throw would have been too much for this ethereal bedroom, but a dusty rose throw does the right trick.

Stick to the Basics

bedroom

This stunning bedroom proves that when it comes to decorating, black and white is truly a no-fail color combination. Dramatic black-painted walls are paired with plenty of white to prevent the room from looking small or unwelcoming. A mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, like the stunning overhead chandelier and the patterned area rug, give the basic color scheme oodles of personality.

6 of 17

Go for Gray

Enhance Your Bedside

Gray is having a moment as the neutral of choice for many designers and decorators, so why not give it a try in your home, too? Gray is the star of the show in this bedroom, which features several different tones of the color. Silvery gray silk draperies and the tufted headboard upholstered with gray fabric are only a few shades darker than the barely-there gray walls. Dark wood furniture frames add dramatic contrast and helps the room feel more grounded.

Character Boost

bedroom

Variations in pattern and texture take this neutral bedroom from blah to beautiful. The white-painted paneled walls wrap the room with subtle texture. Traditional-look elements, like the tufted headboard and patterned bed linens, lend contrast to the cottage-style wall covering. A large woven area rug adds another layer of texture and ensures warmth underfoot.

Variations on a Theme

bedroom

Use different wood tones to give a neutral bedroom a boost of personality. In this bedroom, the warm wood flooring sets the stage for a variety of wooden furnishings. Four vintage doors found new life as a statement-making headboard and a pair of rustic wooden stools serve as a functional space at the foot of the bed. Textured bedding and draperies wrap the bedroom with warmth and welcoming energy.

Room with a View

Beige bedroom with chandelier

Take a cue from this bright bedroom and use a neutral decorating scheme to draw attention to a stunning view. Warm beige walls and creamy off-white furnishings pair expertly with cool blue accents, while also making a nod to the view of the lake outside. The sheer plaid draperies lend privacy without completely blocking the view beyond.

Relaxing with Neutrals

bedroom

Use a canvas of neutral walls to express yourself through accents and accessories. In this bedroom, a series of floral prints above the bed served as the inspiration for the bedding, which features a playful botanical motif. Limiting the use of pattern to just the bedding ensures the bedroom looks relaxing and calm.

11 of 17

Thoroughly Modern Neturals

bedroom

Neutrals lend themselves well to modern decorating schemes. This contemporary-style bedroom features a custom-built storage unit and bed frame, which take center stage thanks to the simple white walls and neutral bedding. The large circular area rug beneath the bed features a playful floral pattern, which gives the bedroom a boost of personality.

Prints Add Life

twin beds

A few clever decorating tricks bring this monochromatic gray bedroom to life. The symmetrical arrangement of furniture creates a pleasing visual balance, which is emphasized by the panels of patterned fabric hung behind each headboard. A striped rug in the center of the room provides another layer of pattern and texture. The quirky benches at the foot of each bed and the vintage-style desk chair give the neutral space a splash of personality.

Welcoming Neutrals

canopy bed

Clean lines and creamy hues give this bedroom inviting energy. The warm, buttery-yellow walls envelop the room with subtle warmth. The golden-stained four-post bed lends a hint of drama. Framed art prints and decorative wall-mount light fixtures add character and a splash pattern to the neutral space.

Make a Statement

Solid Performance

Start with a neutral base to give dramatic furnishings time to shine. In this bedroom, cool gray walls and carpeting lend a neutral backdrop for a large, look-at-me headboard. The headboard is upholstered with plush, black fabric and accented with nailhead trim. The chic foot-of-the-bed ottoman features the same nailhead trim, which ties the whole look together.

15 of 17

Neutrals on Neutrals

101910805

Luxe textures and traditional-style furnishings give this entirely neutral bedroom plenty of personality. Eye-catching elements -- such as the four-post bed, the sparkling chandelier, and the flowing silk draperies -- provide dramatic appeal. The symmetrical arrangement of the furnishings creates balance and relaxing energy.

16 of 17

Mixing Neutrals

bedroom

A simple black-and-white color scheme looks anything but basic in this bedroom. A handful of natural textures -- such as the wicker-adorned headboard and the linen window shades -- in warm tones soften the contrast of the black-and-white palette. Pairing stark shades with warm-tone accents provides a smooth transition from dark to light.

17 of 17

Wide Open Spaces

101873852

A neutral color scheme helps emphasize the soaring height of this bedroom's ceiling. The warm off-white color of the walls reflects light streaming in from the floor-to-ceiling window next to the bed, while the white-painted four-post bed draws the eye upward. A soft area rug beneath the bed adds plush texture underfoot and helps the bedroom set feel grounded in the lofty room.

I received some amazing customer service from this team. So impressed with their desire to ensure that my night stand made it all the way to Miami Florida. I was in need of this item that I could not secure elsewhere and they spent so much time locating this and then shipping it to me. Amazing service and I can only imagine how great their customers are treated that live in Green Bay.

I went shopping on a whim just to see if something caught my eye. Laura immediately greeted us and answered many questions my friend and I had. She steered me in the right direction and was extremely patient as I tried to pick a fabric for my soon to be new sectional. She kept in contact through texting and was always prompt with any questions. My sectional is ordered and it will be awhile before I get it, but it was all in all a great experience. I would highly recommend Laura helping out with any furniture needs. Wenz is a great place to shop. ❤️

We were starting to look for some living room furniture. We had an idea in mind what we were looking for. After looking at a couple different places, we decided to go to Wenz Furniture. (which was recommended to us by the clerk at the hotel we stayed at). Sarah greeted us and asked if we needed any help finding anything. We explained to her our thoughts and she helped us find exactly what we were looking for. Sarah was very kind, patient and knowledgeable in helping us with the purchase we had made. This was a very good experience from start to finish!

We were fortunate to find Desiree Nasto at Wenz Furniture to select our furniture for our living room and sunroom. Desiree was extremely thorough and provided great design recommendations/selections for us. We feel we purchased excellent quality at a very fair price. When the furniture manufacture changed their dye lot on our sofa selection Desiree stood by us and made it right. She took the furniture back and we selected a new color that now fits perfectly with our color scheme. The true strength of a company is demonstrated when there are unforeseen issues beyond their control that come up and they still ensure that their customer is happy. We are very satisfied with our entire experience from selection to delivery. Desiree made the process fun and easy for us. Our next furniture/accessories/mattress will be from Wenz!

I have been dealing with Wenz furniture since I first moved out and bought my first couch. They have been the first and last place I go. Chris and the staff have gone above and beyond every time I have been in need of something to find the right piece of furniture to fit my needs. His delivery crew is second to none. The last couch was a challenge to get in, they did what was necessary to get the couch we really wanted into a cramped tight area. I have absolutely no problem recommending them and should be on the top of everybody's list of places to check when you are looking for new furniture.
